He and his team will also develop and execute strategies to accelerate the availability of wireless health solutions to patients and families. A physician by training, he brings extensive experience in the fields of clinical medicine, academic research, venture capital, public health and health policy.

"Dr. Kaushal is a globally renowned authority working at the intersection of wireless technology and clinical practice, who knows how to bridge the gaps between the health care community, investors, industry and policy makers," said WWHI's founder and chairman, Gary West. "Having him aboard with us is a major coup in our effort to transform the entire health care landscape, and as a result, substantially lower health care costs." WWHI, founded in March 2009 by the Gary and Mary West Foundation, is one of the world's first research organizations dedicated to lowering health care costs by innovating, validating, advocating for, investing in and commercializing wireless technologies to transform medicine. The Gary and Mary West Foundation has committed nearly $100 million to WWHI to date.

"It's very exciting to join a team with the energy and drive to address health care practice and delivery challenges at multiple levels, from advocacy to validation," said Dr. Kaushal. "The organization's unique structure and intellectual capital will enable us to make a big impact with respect to lowering health care costs." Dr. Kaushal comes to the Institute from the FCC, where he was Director of Connected Health. His team published the health care chapter (http://www.broadband.gov/issues/healthcare.html) of the National Broadband Plan and also initiated collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration for the regulatory streamlining of converged telecommunication and medical devices. Prior to this position, he was an investment professional at Polaris Venture Partners, and held roles with Merrill Lynch's Health Care IBD Group and the World Health Organization.

"Dr. Kaushal is a respected visionary and champion for wireless health and one of the few people in the world with such a breadth of experience in this emerging field," said Don Casey, CEO. "He knows the technology marketplace, he has a physician's perspective on patient needs, and he understands the regulatory and financial hurdles that can sometimes deter true innovation. We're honored he is joining our executive team as someone who can help us achieve our mission to lower health care costs." In addition to his role at WWHI, Dr. Kaushal currently serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at George Washington University, with a focus on connected health clinical research, and is a member of the Johns Hopkins University Biomedical Engineering Industrial Liaison Advisory Board.
